The Shear Truth

Shearling is a popular material commonly associated with fall and winter fashion. Shearling is also a commonly misunderstood material. Is it soft? Yes. Is the material cozy and fluffy? Yes. Is it inhumane and cruel? YES.

It is important when buying items made from animal skin and fur, to remember that animals are living beings with emotions, feelings and intelligence. Breeding them for food, fashion and accessories directly enables animal cruelty.

Shearling is not sheared wool, aka a sheep haircut. Rather it is a baby lamb who is slaughtered and therefore, the fur remains attached to the animals skin. I know this information is disturbing, but it is necessary to make the connection to what is casually marketed as a “luxury” material and realize what industry practices you are enabling by purchasing these types of products.

Onto the good news! There are SO many faux shearling pieces that are just as beautiful and cozy without the animal pain and cruelty. So let's leave those beautiful lambs alone and start investing our money in pieces that support a peaceful life for all. 🖤🐑
